Corey Hagelberg at his solo show at the Brauer Museum of Art, No Beauty in This

ABOUT

Corey Hagelberg is an interdisciplinary artist and teacher. He is co-founder and director of the Calumet Artist Residency (CAR), whose mission is to connect people, art and nature in the Calumet Region. For the last 15 years, his work with black and white woodcut has highlighted the relationship between the human and natural world. Recently, his social practice has increasingly addressed issues of food justice, community growing spaces, and regenerative agriculture as it relates to creating resilient local economies and a livable planet. He lives and works in Gary, Indiana.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I seek to emphasize and embrace opposites and contradictions in our everyday experiences. My work blurs the line between humor and tragedy, current and historical, high art and low art, natural and industrial, accusation and confession, and beautiful and grotesque. I hope that it will encourage the viewer to evaluate and challenge their own notions of meaning, value and beauty.
